“Yatra naryastu pujyante ramante tatra Devata, yatraitaastu na pujyante sarvaastatrafalaah kriyaah” Manusmriti 3.56 – which translated reads : “wherever women are given their due respect, even the deities like to reside there and where they are not respected, all action remains unfruitful.”
Is this the same land where women are worshiped?
I am no feminist or associated with an “ism”. However, the atrocities against women and relevant statistics really scare me.
Rape cases in India more than doubled between 1990 and 2008, and national crime records show that 228,650 of the 256,329 violent crimes recorded last year had women as victims. The conviction rate for rape cases is 26 per cent
India stands third when it comes to rape cases, latest data of the Union Home Ministry suggest. Ahead of India are only the United States and South Africa.
According to the data, 18,359 rape cases were registered in India in the first three quarters of this year while in the US, 93,934 and in South Africa 54,926 rape cases were registered respectively.
According to the latest figures released by the Government of India, a woman is now raped in India every 20 minutes. On one track women in India are making remarkable progress in different fields and on other track there is pathetic state of women in India. Probable reasons for these crimes are carelessness about the punishment and pathetic mindset of some men about women.
The people who commit this heinous act of Rape are dirty category of living beings who does not deserve to be alive on this planet. Probable solutions to eliminate these dirty people might be:
Strict Laws :Imposition and Implementation of strict laws against Rape will definitely bring down the rate of atrocities against women.Laws in India need to be amended in such a manner that the culprits will be given strict punishment such as Death Penalty or Life term imprisonment.
Change in Mindset: Just the laws or the Government of India is not responsible for the protection of women in India, change in mindset of entire population in India is necessary. In most of the families in India, women are treated as weaker gender, objects of desire, instruments of progeny. They are just taken for granted. Their opinions are not considered at all. Even,most of the women are used to mindset, its sad that even most of the women promote these kind of stereotypes where the respect towards women is zero. Hence, there is necessity to change the mindset in people about women.
It is really inspiring to see how the youth of the country are reacting and striving for the justice of the Delhi rape case victim. Hope,the Parliament understands the situation and does amendments in laws accordingly.
In this context, I cannot stop quoting Rabindranath Tagore’s poem “Where the mind is without fear”:
